Where the concept can overreach
- Steadiness can become surveillance when every silence is monitored for a future opening.
- Non-imposition can become a flattering name for avoidance when a clear question or repair is actually owed.
- Continual availability can erase the giver's own needs and preserve an asymmetry that neither person has chosen.
- Silence can perform attentiveness while the listener remains internally committed to the original reply.
- Endless clarification can postpone a necessary answer, decision, apology, or boundary.
- Hesitation and subtext can be overinterpreted until the listener's theory again replaces the speaker's words.
- Credulity: confusing initial standing with infallibility and refusing to test a declaration against contradiction, effects, or other testimony.
- Paternalism: hearing only the parts that fit an outside diagnosis, theory, or machine-generated profile and treating the remainder as error.
- Testimony extraction: making disclosure, explanation, or emotional labor the price of receiving care, access, or belief.
- Procedural performance: repeating a person's words while withholding the attention, revision, or material response that genuine reception requires.
- Single-speaker capture: allowing one first-person account to erase another affected person's safety, testimony, or legitimate refusal.
These risks do not cancel the through-line. They keep it from hardening into a total description and leave room for later experience to revise how the pattern is understood.
