Self-understanding is pursued through repeated, multi-perspectival inquiry whose frames can themselves be challenged and revised.

Self-understanding is kept answerable, not merely current. The inquiry is maintained so that blind spots are found before they injure, yesterday's explanation is revised when it no longer fits, and one's actual effects on other people remain evidence rather than an affront to the self-image.

The method must also examine its own frame. Typologies, philosophical lenses, machine synthesis, memory, and introspection may each reveal something while obscuring something else. Inquiry stays alive by inviting correction instead of turning a useful description into identity capture.

The philosophical claim

Maintained self-inquiry is an ethical practice of answerability: a person keeps their self-understanding open to blind spots, revision, and the reported effects of their conduct on others, and any instrument of that inquiry is useful only while it increases the capacity to inspect, correct, and revise rather than converting report or interpretation into identity.

The source family makes a distinction between inquiry and capture. Typology can name contrasts in attention, decision, feeling, or social orientation, making otherwise diffuse reflection easier to discuss. Yet a category can quickly become circular: answers are read through the proposed type, objections become more evidence for it, and a model's confidence substitutes for independent observation. The ethical stakes are therefore autonomy and epistemic standing. The person must remain more authoritative about what was meant while remaining open to counterevidence about interpretation and conduct; the analytical system must offer hypotheses without claiming a hidden essence, clinical diagnosis, score-based rank, or cognitive destiny.

How the claim operates

Begin with open description before offering a type vocabulary. Keep the record layered: direct self-description, reported conduct, value or refusal, temporal change, attributed observation, and analyst inference must not be collapsed. When a pattern is proposed, generate at least one rival account, ask what would contradict it, and look beyond answers elicited by forced-choice prompts. Test whether a claimed preference changes with relationship, safety, role, fatigue, practice, or time; never use attachment language to reveal a supposedly purer personality. Record corrections as changes to the model instead of retrofitting them into confirmation. Retain a term only when it helps the person name a checkable practice, question, or tension, and retire it without identity loss when it stops doing that work.

Making self-inquiry an ethical orientation rather than a method changes the question it answers. A method asks how to know oneself accurately; an ethic asks what one owes on account of being partially unknown to oneself. The concept's answer is stark: a person who does not maintain the inquiry is choosing to let their blind spots operate on other people unsupervised. The practice exists because self-opacity is not a private misfortune — it has a blast radius.

Taken seriously, the idea dissolves the portrait model of identity, in which self-knowledge is a likeness completed once and defended thereafter. What replaces it is not fluidity for its own sake but a standing appointment with revision: yesterday's explanation is kept on file, today's life is allowed to contradict it, and the contradiction is recorded as a change to the model rather than absorbed as confirmation. Identity becomes something one remains answerable for describing accurately, not something one is entitled to have settled.

The concept refuses a set of captures that all share one structure — the conversion of an instrument of inquiry into an owner of the person. The flattering type that makes affirmation feel like rigor; the label that reads objections as further evidence for itself; the machine synthesis whose confidence outranks the person's direct report; the vocabulary that has become so emotionally useful that revising it feels like dying a little. Each failure mode in the public list names one such promotion, and together they explain the concept's central discipline: every mirror is kept demoted to the status of hypothesis.

The five lenses are notable for each carrying its own anti-capture device. The psychological lens holds typology and attachment as rival hypotheses so neither becomes a timeless core; hermeneutics exposes the label as a fore-structure that shapes what the next answer seems to mean; epistemology demands to know what would disconfirm each claim; the developmental lens grades an instrument by whether the person can outgrow it without identity loss; and the ethical lens assigns control of the reading's meaning to the person it describes. The apparatus is built the way a safe laboratory is built — every instrument has a shutoff.

What distinguishes this from mere epistemic hygiene is the outward audit. Blind spots are, by definition, invisible from the inside; the only reliable instruments for them are other people. So the practice admits attributed observation — how one's conduct actually landed — as evidence with standing, kept in its own layer, neither collapsed into self-report nor allowed to overwrite it. The person remains most authoritative about what they meant; they are not the final authority on what they did. Holding both halves of that sentence at once is the concept's entire difficulty.

The intent is a self kept revisable as a form of respect — for the people who live with its effects, and for the person it will become. An identity that cannot be corrected is not strength but a slow sentence; an inquiry that never closes is not insecurity but the maintenance schedule of someone who expects to keep changing and wants their self-description, their conduct, and the people around them to be allowed to keep up with each other.

Type essentialism: converting a temporary organizing term into a claim about fixed identity, hidden essence, or inevitable behavior.
Confirmation by reinterpretation: treating agreement, objection, nuance, and correction as equally diagnostic of the same preferred conclusion.

The evidence does not support a public type assignment. The first exchange moves through incompatible assistant readings and changes direction after the person offers alternative context; a request for less sycophantic analysis directly challenges the reliability of the earlier framing. The later rerun supplies many answers but stops during skeptical review, and its uploaded method survives only as a file reference and agent summary. A later instruction excludes the MBTI analysis from one direct-statement project, demonstrating that relevance is scope-dependent rather than automatic. The reading would change if a canonical paper body were recovered, if independently situated conduct consistently supported or contradicted a specific mechanism, or if later self-report revised the practice. None of those possibilities would turn a type into identity.
